What happens when you are a celebrity who has gone public about using medical or recreational cannabis? Naturally, your fans may share some of those interests and values, including cannabis advocacy for personal wellness.

There is no doubt that celebrities can successfully endorse and sell products. But in the cannabis industry, celebs aren’t endorsing other brands. They are doubling down and creating their own. And cannabis consumers are entering into a new era where it is not only about the quality of cannabis or CBD products you buy. Some consumers are keen to use only designer or celebrity brands.

In the past three years, there have been several celebrities that launched successful cannabis brands. The original poster boy for 420 culture (Tommy Chong) created his hand-selected strains. Whoopi Goldberg created a company called “Whoopi & Maya” to provide strains tailored for pain relief. And shuttered the doors to her business for the time being.

In 2020, some new cannabis brands launched that could become best-sellers by some celebrities that you might not expect to enter into the marijuana market. Check out the story behind four new cannabis companies that stars launched in 2020.

The Trailer Park Boys

The Trailer Park Boys announced in 2018 that they were developing a cannabis brand inspired by their comedy series. The Canadian ‘mockumentary’ series was created by Mike Clattenburg, which followed the movie “Trailer Park Boys” in 1999. The show is set in a trailer park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

There are fans of the series in both Canada and the United States. In January 2021, a new season dubbed “Trailer Park Boys: Jail” premiered. The ongoing popularity of the show led the brand to create a line of pre-rolls. In the series, Ricky Lafleur (French for ‘the flower’) refers to his pre-rolls as ‘loose cigarettes.’

The comedy franchise has partnered with a New Brunswick-based cannabis company called OrganiGram to produce and distribute the pre-rolls. The Trailer Park Boys have also licensed their alcohol brand called “Liquormen’s Ol’ Dirty Canadian Whiskey.” And since Canada has federally legalized cannabis, you can try it if you visit the great white north.

Kristen Bell

Who doesn’t love Kristen Bell? She has acted in movies like ‘Burlesque’ and the hilarious comedy film ‘Bad Moms.’ She was also the star of teenage angst with a side of detective series called “Veronica Mars’. She is likable, and representative of millennial-aged professional women, and has some serious brand influence power.

So, it is not surprising that Kristen Bell decided to launch her own CBD line. Partnering with Chronos Group, Bell has created  CBD vapes products. The product line includes:

  • Happy Dance Whipped Body Butter (200 mg CBD)
  • Happy Dance Head-to-Toe Coconut Melt (225 mg CBD)
  • Happy Dance Stress Away Bath Bomb (60 mg CBD)

The holistic self-care line of skin products is targeted at millennial to middle-aged women. Kristen Bell is a celebrity and spokesperson known for her relatability, and consumers trust her integrity. The messaging will resonate with stressed and tired professional women and parents.

“It was essential to me that Happy Dance be a purpose-driven brand that challenged the traditional notion of self-care,” said Kristen Bell. “And when I care for myself, I can better care for others. Happy Dance’s commitment to care extends to those who need it most, which is why we are honored to be partnering with A New Way of Life Reentry Project.”

The third-party tested vegan and cruelty-free skincare products are quality controlled and tested for solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals. Bell has also committed a portion of the proceeds to a charitable cause. The POC-owned organization based in Los Angeles, “A New Way of Life Reentry Project,” will help black Americans access pro bono legal services for women who have been incarcerated.

Jay-Z

If you listen to lyrics written by Jay-Z, you get the message that he is a man that knows a thing or two about weed. Rap songs that recount his early days when he was operating an illegal drug distribution business in New York. Raised in poverty, Jay-Z’s story of reform from black market dealer to creative genius and now billionaire entrepreneur is inspiring.

Jay-Z lives the kind of life that most of us envy. The cars, the mansions, the money, gold, jewels, and the music. When it comes to the opulent lifestyle, Jay-Z is the epitome of luxury. It makes sense that he decided to launch his super-luxury cannabis brand, called MONOGRAM.

If you visit the MONOGRAM website, Jay-Z has a little corner on the homepage where you can actually listen to the “sounds from the grow room.” This begs the question of whether Jay-Z’s ultra-premium cannabis products are better because they pipe in the music. Does good music make better marijuana? Maybe that is his trade secret. Or why his premium blunt is $50.

Mike Tyson

Whether you like Mike Tyson or not, you can’t deny the man knows how to put on a show. And market his brand successfully to fans. In several interviews, Mike Tyson teased the development of his brand of cannabis products. He launched Tyson Holistic Products officially in 2020.

Ready for the knockout punch? Mike Tyson is preparing to do more than sell his celebrity brand of weed. He is turning 40 acres of his 420-acre property near Death Valley, California, into a resort. A pot-friendly vacation destination, with the world’s longest lazy river. The resort will also feature an onsite shop (California has legalized recreational), a massive pool, and glamping in style.

Tyson Ranch is being built and should be finished in 2021. Then Mike Tyson and his business partners expect to make it the ‘Coachella’ of weed. Tyson will be calling in favors from his celebrity friends and musicians for entertainment events.

Other celebrities have been early-adopters and jumped on the green goldrush bandwagon. Snoop Dogg created “Leafs by Snoop.” Willie Nelson has his own “Willie Reserve” brand. Nelson might be one of the oldest celebrities to get busted for pot. In 2010 he was arrested with six ounces on his tour bus by Texas authorities. That prompted a different kind of “Free Willy” campaign. The 77-year-old was released after paying a $500 fine.

What Will Be the Most Popular Celebrity Cannabis Brands of 2021?

Celebrity strains of hand-curated cannabis are blowing up the way that branded alcohol products did twenty years ago. Gwyneth Paltrow has her Goop brand of CBD patches, vapes, bath bombs, and herbal teas distributed by MedMen.
